Metallica: Death Magnetic

It is the wee hours of the morning. I have just finished listening to Metallica's latest CD, Death Magnetic. Let me rewind to shortly before midnight.

I drove to the Bull Moose store in Brunswick and the lights were on but I had expected a lot more cars (c'mon this is a midnight release of Metallica advertised on WCYY). So I was thinking maybe this one wasn't doing the midnight release thing. No, there were people inside. I realize now that most of them must have been from Bowdoin College and walked there. There were two sales clerks there that welcomed me. Gave me my Metallica button and offered me pizza.

I joined the milling throng and browsed the music and video game selection (and ate a couple pieces of free pizza). The wait was on. More people trickled in. Only several minutes were left. I moved to a display that was closer to the register. The clerk announced one minute left. We eyed one another wondering who was going to be the first in line. Then the clerk announced the witching hour. We stormed the register... Well not quite.

There was no mad rush. We were all fans and waited patiently. Those that came with friends hung out and talked together. The rest of us browsed until it was time. Then we moved forward. There was no mad rush, but when the second cashier opened the second register I did manage to get the second CD sold tonight at this location. I rushed back to the van and went to Walmart (where else do you go after midnight). I let my stepdaughter go cash her check while I listened to the CD (no really you think I'd want to go to Walmart after getting this CD). After she got done we returned home.

I dropped her off and took the van down by the river to listen to the rest of the CD (not really reference an old Chris Farley skit on Saturday Night Live and you'll get the joke). However, one thing that I really did try to do was call Joey Disco at WCYY and share with him and his listeners my excitement at getting this CD. Guess he will just have to read about it here instead.

Well I am adding the CD to my ipod so I can listen to it at work tomorrow.

Well I can't say as I have ever had the time or a good reason to sit outside or inside a store with a not quite mob of people waiting for a midnight release of anything. But then again I am not a very exciting person. I barely leave the house.

Today was the exception to that. It wasn't as exciting as attending a release, but it was more than I'm usually exposed to on a daily, weekly, or sometimes even monthly basis.

Where I've been having issues with remembering things I've taken extra steps to ensure that I get everything done that needs to be. I write things on my wall calendar, program things ino the calendar on my computer, and every time I think of it (which has been more often lately ... thank goodness my bad memory is getting better!) I remind myself about the upcoming events of the week. Now today, being Monday and all, I had all last week and all weekend of my little memory rituals so I wouldn't forget the appointment that was written on the calendar for my daughter today. I planned my whole day around it. Having 4 kids, I didn't exactly get a chance to run errands over the summer. There just wasn't time.

Today I only had the two youngest. So as soon as the bus drove off with the older boys, the two little ones and I were off!

First stop was the bank. I needed to take out $40 ($20 for the appointment and $20 to open a new business account). Punched everything in and my memory issue kicks in. I only take out $20. That's alright. I'll just keep the cash for the new account and use the bank card for the appointment.

I look at the clock and realize if we go to the appointment now then we'll be way too early. So I take a look at my to-do list (yes, almost organized there) and one of my errands isn't too far away. It's in the wrong direction, but there's time.

We're off to the hardware store for a new light switch and cover. The little kids have never been to this store before so it is quite a novelty to them. We won't be long so I don't bother with the stroller and just let the kids walk in with me. My two-yeaar-old discovers lots of things at his level. I remind him to put them back ... several times ... as we make our way to the switches. We find what we need and head to the check-out. Low and behold, there is one person in line at the register and my little guy freezes. Today he's decided to play shy. There's a second register so I try to maneuver him to that one. Little girl needs picked up ... we can handle this. I finally get my little guy to the register where he dutifully places his treasures on the counter then steps behind me to play shy. I set baby girl on the floor while I rumage through my bag for the bank card ... find the $20 and decide a couple of bucks might not make a difference. Most accounts in this area can be opened with a $5 deposit, so I use the cash. I hear my little guy go, "oooooo!"

That's not a good thing for anyone who was wondering. He's found the candy display. I tell him to put the candy he now has in his hand back but he insists it's M&Ms and he must have it. He finally puts it back only to grab another piece of candy. Evil candy display! That's alright. I get my change, remove the evil candy and realize little girl has started a conversation with the other cashier while little guy has had me occupied. Thank goodness this is a small store in a small town!

We make it back to the van without further incident and check the time. If we go to the appointment now we should be just about on time.

We get to the doctor's office and drag in little girl, little boy and shot buddy. Our Shot buddy for today is a stuffed bear we have already decided was going to stay for any other boys and girls in need of something to squeeze when they get their shots. Shot buddies work quite well and I wonder why no one has thought of it before.

I send the little kids over to play with the toys while I get us checked in. I give them our name ... they ask if we are with the doctor or with the lab, but they still can't find us. Finally they look us up on the computer and the receptionist looks at me and tells me my appointment isn't until ten fifteen. I'd had 9:30 written on the calendar. I must have written it down wrong. She corrects me ... "Today is 9-15 and your appointment is 10-15." I could have sworn she was talking about a time ... not October. Why didn't she just say October? Ugh.

We leave Shot Buddy in the capable hands of the staff and decide to go visit Daddy at work. It's almost his break time anyway. Besides, I'm sure he could use a smile.

Without going into detail about te rest of my day, I think you get the point that even though I don't get out often, when I do it's never boring.

Maybe I'll do a midnight release just for the experience. I'll have to keep an eye out for ones in this area.
